Technology Workforce and Artificial Intelligence Talent

Greater Seattle is home to one of the deepest technology talent pools in North America. The region supports more than 187,900 technology jobs, nearly three times the employment expected for a metropolitan area of similar size, contributing a total Gross Regional Product (GRP) of $174.7 billion. The average earnings per job were $361,802. From 2020 to 2025, the industry experienced 3% growth, with 7% growth projected from 2025 to 2030. This concentration of technical expertise provides employers with exceptional access to experienced software engineers, cloud architects, AI researchers, cybersecurity professionals, and technology leaders.

Global technology companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Expedia Group, Google, Meta, Nintendo, Pokémon, Salesforce, Smartsheet, T-Mobile, Valve, Zillow, and numerous high-growth startups call the Greater Seattle region home. These companies operate more than 100 engineering centers across the region, creating a continuous pipeline of experienced talent and entrepreneurship.

Artificial intelligence has become one of Greater Seattle’s defining competitive advantages. The region is home to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, two of the world’s largest cloud and AI platforms, as well as leading research institutions including the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2) and the University of Washington.

Between 2021 and 2024, the Puget Sound tech workforce grew by 5.1% to nearly 185,000 workers, ranking seventh among the top 50 U.S. markets (CBRE, 2024). The region also boasts the third-largest concentration of AI-specialized talent in the country, approximately 32,965 workers, trailing only the San Francisco Bay Area and New York metro (CBRE, 2024). Notably, 61.8% of this AI talent is employed directly within the tech industry, showing the depth of specialization in the local economy. The Greater Seattle region maintains the third-largest AI talent pool in the U.S. and is consistently cited as a top three market for AI jobs (CBRE, 2024; Nucamp, 2025).

Venture Capital and AI Investment Trends

The region boasts over 400 AI companies and more than 200 AI startups. Over the past decade, Greater Seattle AI companies have secured around $4 billion in funding. Seattle region also ranked as having the second most AI job openings in 2025, only behind New York City (Axios, 2025), highlighting sustained investor confidence in the region’s innovation ecosystem.

Rather than concentrating in a single market segment, investment spans multiple industries where artificial intelligence is transforming business operations and products.

Leading venture firms, including Madrona, Sequoia Capital, Index Ventures, and Khosla Ventures, continued investing in Greater Seattle companies, showing confidence in the region’s technical talent, research capabilities, and commercialization potential.

Early-stage momentum is particularly strong, with a large number of companies raising seed and Series A rounds. Many startups founded in the past few years, especially in generative AI and AI infrastructure, are already securing funding, indicating a steady pipeline of new companies entering the market.

Overall, the ecosystem is balanced, with both emerging startups and later-stage companies raising significant capital. AI is being applied across sectors including healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, and cybersecurity, supporting Greater Seattle’s position as a leading center for applied AI and long-term innovation growth.
